Ok, granted a published author, a good writer does not make - but it does
show a good sign that the author knows what he/she is doing.

Exactly - the original authors don't seem as screwed up as us to come up
with those plot lines.  :]

Having writen a few of these, it becomes somewhat of a cliche for anyone 
to define what fan fiction is or should be.

Fan fiction is just that.

Fiction written by fans of a book, short story, series, etc.  which 
people do not want to see die.

They see a situation, think of something, and go for it.

I still think fan fiction should have an slight element of
camp/oddness/unbelieveablility to it.  It's something about going to cons
ten years ago (or there abouts) and seeing bad photocopies of uterly
rediculous stories based on good TV shows.

Ask Bert what I'm doing to SK or Twister how Darlene is getting a long 
and you'll see what I mean.

They created characters and situations based upon "What if this 
happened?

That is what fan fiction is about.

Exactly.  Actually, I do think you left off the bit about FF generating tons
of spam - but that may  just be an added plus, I dunno. ;]
